WHAT THE FUCK IS MOTION DESIGN?!
-
ANYTHING THAT MOVES!
Not to be pedantic but it’s really any kind of design that moves. It is a multidisciplinary craft that incorporates the skills of editors, designers, animators and computer programmers… probably a few other things too. Which means the responsibilities of a motion designer encompass not only what moves but how it moves. Frequently we are asked to do some combination of a lot of different tasks.

STORYTELLING
Just kidding. I’m not sure why everyone in TV has to call themselves a storyteller but I’m not.
I prefer to think of myself as a craftsman. I build things for clients who are trying to communicate an idea or feeling or more often than not display information.

PROBLEM SOLVING
Most of Motion Design is solving problems. Like, we need to say XYZ in this amount of time with this much space and it’s almost always challenging.
What’s fun about it is getting through those challenges in unique and creative ways. -
CODING
Believe it or not, coding can play a big part in motion design. whether it’s simple math expressions, scripts or full python builds, including code in design is an immense boost to the capacity of a designer.
We do that a lot.
-
CREATIVE DIRECTION
Sometimes you come to a motion designer looking for someone to make an existing design move cool and sometimes you need the design itself. STYLE BABY!
I have a style I lean towards but part of the job is versatility. Every job needs its own style. -
ORGANIZATION
Probably the least sexy, and most important part of motion design is organization. Even seemingly simple jobs can create immense complexity and the best way to keep design the central focus of a job is by having a strong workflow. We do this for every job. NO MATTER WHAT.
